The best dashcam viewer software in 2026
Brand apps, desktop GPS players, ordinary video players and browser-based viewers compared. Which dashcam software is best for watching, sorting and saving your footage?
Every dashcam records good footage. Watching it is another story: a card full of files with cryptic names, front and rear split apart, events in another folder. The right software turns that into something you can actually use.
Full disclosure: we make Tripframe, so it is first on this list. We have tried to be fair about where the others are better.
What good dashcam software does
- Sorts clips by day and time, not by file name
- Plays front and rear together, in sync
- Labels event and parking clips
- Steps frame by frame and saves a clean still
- Shows the GPS route and speed on a map
- Works with more than one brand
1. Tripframe: best free viewer, nothing to install
Tripframe runs in your browser. Open the SD card and every clip appears by day and time, with front, rear and interior paired into one moment.
- Recognises Viofo, BlackVue, Thinkware, 70mai and Nextbase names, plus Tesla, GoPro and any name with a date in it
- Trips with their length and the time between them, and the top speed of every clip
- Synced cameras: side by side, picture in picture (resizable) or one camera, with zoom
- Frame-by-frame stepping, stills as PNG, JPG or BMP, and recording the current view (including the map) as a video
- Export part of a clip faster, slower or backwards, and join a trip into one video without re-encoding
- GPS route, speed, altitude and G-force for Viofo (Novatek), BlackVue and GoPro files, with graphs, markers and export as GPX, KML, CSV or GeoJSON
- Finds loud moments in the sound
- Free and open source, no account, nothing is uploaded
Where it falls short: no camera settings, and GPS for Thinkware, Nextbase, Garmin and 70mai is not supported yet.
2. Dashcam Viewer (Earthshine Software)
A long-standing desktop app for Windows and Mac with very wide GPS support: it reads more than 140 camera models. Telemetry graphs, GPS export, clip export and joining clips are all there. The free version opens two files at a time; Plus and Pro licences lift the limits. See our free Dashcam Viewer alternative comparison.
3. Registrator Viewer
A free Windows program that supports many cameras and shows GPS on a map. Powerful, but the interface is dated and it is Windows only.
4. The brand's own software
BlackVue Viewer, Thinkware Dashcam Viewer and MyNextbase Player work well for their own brand and can often change camera settings. Viofo and 70mai are mostly app-only. Read alternatives to the dashcam brand apps.
5. A normal video player (VLC, Windows Media Player)
Plays any single file, but knows nothing about dates, cameras or events. Fine for one clip; painful for a whole trip.

Our advice
Start with Tripframe: it is free and takes ten seconds to try. If your camera stores GPS in a format Tripframe cannot read yet, add Dashcam Viewer.
