The best SD cards for dashcams in 2026

A dashcam writes to its card non-stop, so ordinary cards wear out fast. These high-endurance microSD cards last, plus how much capacity you need for your camera.

The memory card is the most common reason a dashcam fails to record the one moment that matters. A dashcam writes to it every second you drive, overwriting the oldest footage again and again. Ordinary cards made for phones and cameras are not built for that.

What to buy: high-endurance cards

Endurance cards are rated for thousands of hours of continuous recording. These are all solid choices:

Card Why
Samsung PRO Endurance Very long rated recording time, reliable, widely available
SanDisk High Endurance Good value, easy to find everywhere
SanDisk Max Endurance SanDisk's toughest card, for 4K and multi-channel
Kingston High Endurance Solid alternative, often cheaper
Transcend High Endurance Popular with dashcam makers, good warranty
Western Digital Purple (microSD) Built for surveillance cameras, handles constant writing well

Many dashcam makers also sell their own branded endurance cards; they are fine too.

Avoid

  • Cards sold as "Extreme" or "Ultra" for phones and action cams: fast, but not built for endless overwriting
  • Unbranded or suspiciously cheap high-capacity cards: fake capacity is common
  • Very old cards moved over from another device

How much capacity do you need?

A simple rule: gigabytes per hour ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.45.

Setup Typical total bitrate Per hour 128 GB holds 256 GB holds
1080p front only 12–15 Mbps ~6 GB ~20 h ~40 h
1440p front + rear 30–40 Mbps ~16 GB ~8 h ~16 h
4K front + 1440p rear 50–70 Mbps ~27 GB ~4.5 h ~9 h
3 channels, 4K front 70–90 Mbps ~36 GB ~3.5 h ~7 h

Check your camera's manual for the largest card it supports; many accept 256 or 512 GB.

Keep the card healthy

  • Format the card in the camera, not on your computer: see how often to format a dashcam SD card.
  • Replace it every year or two with daily use, or when the camera reports card errors.
  • Copy important clips off the card straight away; the camera will overwrite them.

Checking what is on the card

Put the card in your computer and open it in Tripframe. You see straight away whether the camera has been recording every day, which is the best health check there is.
