How often should you format your dashcam's SD card?
Loop recording does not mean you never have to format. How often to format a dashcam card, why to do it in the camera, and the signs that a card is wearing out.
A dashcam overwrites old footage automatically, so it is easy to think the card takes care of itself. Over time, though, constant overwriting fragments the card and wears it out. A regular format keeps recording reliable.
How often
- Every 2 to 4 weeks if you drive daily
- Once a month with occasional driving
- Always after you have copied off an important clip and before driving on
- Always when you put a new card in
Many cameras have a reminder you can switch on. Viofo, Thinkware and others also offer automatic formatting on some models.
Format in the camera, not on your computer
Use the format option in the camera menu or its app. The camera sets up the card with the exact file system and folders it expects. A card formatted on a computer can work, but it can also cause recording errors or a camera that refuses the card.
First, save what you want to keep
Formatting deletes everything, including locked event clips. Before you format:
- Put the card in your computer.
- Open it in Tripframe and check the event and parking clips for anything you want to keep.
- Copy those files to your computer.
Signs a card is wearing out
- The camera beeps or warns about a card error
- Gaps in the recordings: hours or days missing
- Clips that will not play or are cut short
- The card was in use for more than a year or two of daily driving
An open card in Tripframe shows every recorded day in a list, so gaps stand out immediately.
